ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICES SCHEDULED AT ST. MARY’S CHURCH

Ash Wednesday is the traditional name given to the first day of Lent, the period of spiritual preparation for the celebration of Easter. On February 10 the congregation of St. Mary's Episcopal Church will observe the day with two services which will include the Imposition of Ashes.

“The Imposition of Ashes is an ancient custom by which a person acknowledges their imperfection,” stated the Priest-in-Charge, the Rev. Peter J. Van Hook. “It is also a sign of our immortality, as the pastor says to each person, “Dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”

The ashes are obtained by taking the leftover Palms from the previous year’s Palm Sunday services, burning them, and grinding them into a fine powder.

Two services will be held on February 10, at 12:00 noon and 7:00 PM. Special music will be provided by the church’s Organist, Anna Judkins. Dr. Van Hook will preach on the text from the Sermon on the Mount, “Jesus said, "Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them….”

St. Mary's Episcopal Church is located in downtown Provo at 50 W. 200 No. Ample parking is available from 200 W.
